Coping With Depression

Suggestions for Coping with
Depression & Stress

  • Stay connected. Maintain contact with others by phone, email, notes, and face to face contact. Isolation deepens depression and stress.
  • Smile. This simple act can contribute to altering your mood.
  • Set priorities. Identify what needs to be done in the order it needs to be done. Make tasks manageable.
  • Acknowledge yourself. Congratulate yourself after you complete the tasks that you set out to do.
  • Exercise. Movement, aerobic stimulation and hard work will stimulate endorphins and make you feel better.
  • Laugh. Watch funny movies or sitcoms. Laughter decreases stress hormones and activates cells that boost the immune system. It also feels great!
  • Use a journal. Write about your experience. You can start by writing "I feel..., I am..., I wish..., I want..., I hope..." Write in a free flowing thought process.
  • Change your focus. Focus on what is working rather than on what is not working.
  • Write a gratitude list. Identify and list what you are grateful for, you can do this on a daily basis.
  • Thank yourself. At the end of the day thank yourself for the things that you have done during the day, even those that are mundane and ordinary.
  • Meditate. Meditation can calm your mind and body, lower blood pressure, and energize you.
  • Change your posture. Walk with a bounce, sit straight rather than slouched, keep your head up. Changing your posture will change your state.
  • Express your feelings. Repressing anger, sadness, fear and loneliness contributes to stress and depression.
  • Breathe. Take deep breaths through the day.
  • Be in nature. Seeing or visualizing the sky will calm the mind. Seeing or visualizing water will calm the emotions. Seeing or visualizing the mountains will increase grounding and stability. When you can't be in nature, think of it.
  • Learn the Emotional Freedom Technique™ (EFT). This is a great way to overcome emotional challenges. Go to www.emofree.com.
